Art has been woven into the fabric of Aspen Snowmass from the very beginning. In fact, it is so inextricably a part of who we are, that — even in the midst of a global pandemic — we found a way to continue bringing art installations to the mountains. In challenging times, art has an uncanny way of helping to lift us up, lighten the mood, deeper our understanding of ourselves and the world we inhabit, and show us the way forward.

Below, you can view current and former art installations at Aspen Snowmass, with information on the artist and collaborative partners who helped make them possible.

  • Detour

We commissioned four artists to create 8' x 16' paintings for the heated dining tents located outside the Sundeck on Aspen Mountain and Ullrhof on Snowmass. All of the paintings will be on display all winter long (2021–22 season).

From the artist: "Aspen is a town rooted in influence from jazz music culture. Knowing that the Jazz Aspen Snowmass Festival has been around for 30 years, I chose to pay tribute to Charles Mingus as a major jazz pioneers who paved the way for so many, and who undoubtedly influenced jazz cultures around the world."

    Alexandrea Pangburn

In Scottish folklore, the Kelpie is a feared mythological god of the waters. The artwork depicts the Kelpie in the waters of Maroon Lake where he surfs the waves of the water during the summer and powder in the winter. (can revise as you see fit, its kinda cheesy).

    Anna Charney

The design for this project is standard of my abstract painting work which I like to describe as “digital taffy.” Painting with a combination of aerosol, paint markers, and acrylic, I try to create an illusionistic and sensational optical experience for the viewers of my paintings. For this installation in Aspen, I’ve planned for a piece with an icy cool color scheme to fit the winter feels on the mountain."

    John Hastings

It’s clear that Aspen brings in people from around the globe to view the amazing changing colors of fall and wonderful snowy ski weather in winter but there’s more to Aspen than the just two seasons. This piece showcases the colorful life that springs into action as the snowmelt travels to other parts of the country. Spring and summer's birth of wildflowers amounts to the Aspen trees is a beautiful base for the gorgeous sunsets at a higher altitude.
