Dangerous Climate Myths vs. Real Solutions
January 10, 2024 | Limelight Aspen | 6PM - Doors Open at 5:30PM for Drinks | Free Entry
The big lies behind carbon offsets, direct air capture, nuclear, hydrogen, bioenergy, and net zero—and what we should do instead.
Much public discourse around climate change emphasizes magical “solutions” that are too slow, too expensive, outright phony, or make things worse. But we have all the solutions we need today. Joe’s talk demystifies climate change and explains the most effective actions for you, your company, and the country. Dr. Joseph Romm is former acting assistant secretary of energy efficiency and renewable energy from the Clinton Administration. He is a senior research fellow at the University of Pennsylvania Center for Science, Sustainability and the Media, where he recently authored, “Are carbon offsets unscalable, unjust, and unfixable—and a threat to the Paris Climate Agreement?” and “Why direct air carbon capture and storage (DACCS) is not scalable and ‘net zero’ is a dangerous myth.” In 2009, Time magazine named him "Hero of the Environment″ and “The Web’s most influential climate-change blogger" for his work at Climate Progress. Rolling Stone named him one of “100 people who are changing America.” Romm has 10 books on climate change, clean energy, and communications, including an Oxford University Press book that NY Magazine called "the best single-source primer on the state of climate change.” His 2004 book, “The Hype about Hydrogen: Fact and Fiction in the Race to Save the Climate,” was named one of the best science and technology books of 2004 by Library Journal. He holds a PhD in physics from M.I.T.
