Love Is Love At Aspen Snowmass

Aspen Snowmass and Love is Love blog

We love love — it’s as easy as that.

Here at Aspen Snowmass, it doesn’t matter who you love. In addition to focusing on environmental sustainability and corporate responsibility, Aspen Skiing Company has taken big strides towards LGBTQ+ activism.

Earlier this season, Aspen Skiing Company unveiled a new campaign, “Give A Flake,” which encouraged voter participation on key issues like climate change. This rousing campaign not only urged the public to vote in midterm elections, but also to correspond directly with senators and other legislators who voted against the development of climate change policy.
Additionally, Aspen Skiing Company has its hands in quite a few initiatives focusing on LGBTQ rights. The company recently signed onto the Business Statement for Transgender Equality, which opposes any legislative efforts to limit transgender rights.

Aspen Snowmass is also a staunch supporter of the Equality Act, which creates clear and consistent protections for LGBTQ+ individuals. Postcards with messaging in support of the Equality Act are available for guests in-resort to sign and will be sent to legislators in the 116th Congress to encourage legislative action.

However, Aspen wasn’t always this progressive. In 1977, inspired by his hometown of Portland, Oregon, Jon Busch lobbied for the Aspen City Council to forbid discrimination based on sexual orientation. The ordinance unanimously passed, distinguishing the City of Aspen as a pioneer of its generation.

Busch also founded Aspen Gay Ski Week, the first of its kind. After wrapping up its 42nd year, Aspen Gay Ski Week draws thousands of participants to the slopes each season, and reinforces Aspen’s commitment to defend everyone’s right to love. Busch was recently elected into the Aspen Hall of Fame for his legendary contributions to our community.

“It started with the ‘Give A Flake’ Campaign,” said Director of Sustainability Matt Hamilton, “It made us realize how business can play a much larger role in enacting change. We’ve always been supportive of the climate and green energy, but we realized we have the opportunity to do much more.”

Never short of ideas, she’s always scheming up another adventure… or the next great meal.
