People love deep-winter powder, but it’s arguable that the sunny, slushy afternoons of the spring season are the sport’s glory days. It’s when the music turns up just a little louder, rose bottles get popped and you can leave your boot-heaters at home. And fortunately, this April, Aspen Snowmass has extended its season on weekends through the month. Get your Hawaiian print T-shirts and Pit Vipers ready.

The Apres is Now an Official Event

It comes in the form of a three-day music festival at the base of Buttermilk Mountain featuring Colorado favorites Umphrey’s McGee and the String Cheese Incident (pictured), April 5-7. The festival is the first Aspen Snowmass has hosted, bringing thousands of music fans to an outdoor venue situated in the same place that the Winter X Games take place.

Catch Umphrey’s McGee on Thursday and String Cheese Incident on Friday and Saturday, as well as performances by Moon Taxi, The Main Squeeze, Southern Avenue, and ALO. Single-day and three-day festival passes are available for both the concert and a combined lift-ticket, concert pass.

Aspen Highlands is Open Through April 28

The slopes are just too good to shut down. Though Highlands will still send off the season in its epic style with a closing party on April 14, it will reopen for two extended weekends, April 19–21 and 26–28. That means more than 1,000 acres of skiing and 100 trails well into the spring. Discounted tickets are available for pass holders and regular purchase.

There Are 60th Birthdays to Celebrate

Buttermilk and Aspen Highlands both turned 60 years old this year, and to honor those six decades lift tickets are just $60 a day when lodging is also booked (minimum two days of skiing required).

4pm is the New 3:30pm

Because it’s light until past 7pm, the lifts spin until 4pm so that eager skiers can get in a full seven hours of shredding. Or those who want to wait until the snow softens can head up in the afternoon and ride until close to dinner time (or happy hour).

Did We Mention Après Ski?

After months of snowy, sunless days, it’s T-shirt time. After a day on the slopes, there’s nothing better than joining friends or family for a frosty beverage and French fries on the patio. In Aspen the party starts at Shlomo’s or the Ajax Tavern; at Highlands hit up the Alehouse or Cloud Nine; in Snowmass, Base Camp or Venga Venga are must-do stops and even Buttermilk has its own après-scene at Bumps and Hometeam BBQ. Schuss all day and cheers into the night — while still getting home before dark — with spring’s greatest achievement: sunny après.
