How did you end up in Aspen?
Well, I wanted out of the city life and I wanted to see new things. I originally spent a summer-season working in Glacier National Park in Montana. While I was there, Aspen Skiing Company was in town for a job fair and I met the Executive Chef. I had my Steelers hat on and he’s a Cleveland fan so we had plenty to say to each other. Aspen had a housing spot for me and I got the job.

What do you tell your friends that you do for work?
I tell them that I flip pizza on top of a mountain.

What is your favorite part of the job?
I never grew up skiing, so understanding the reason why people travel here and seeing skiers and snowboarders doing crazy tricks while I’m headed down the mountain after work is pretty amazing. I love interacting with the younger kids, too; when they come up to the pizza station and are excited they’ve just done a black run, I get to be part of the fun.

What do you find most challenging about your job?
Well, it’s not skiing down after work, that’s fun. I think it’s the fast pace, always having a smile on your face while staying on your toes everyday, because everyday is busy. By 10:45am, kids are wanting their pizza. It took me a while to get used to the fast pace and being customer focused at the same time.

What skills or characteristics do you think your job requires?
You have to be able to work hard. Being open-minded helps; you’re going to meet all types of people here, so you have to be able to be flexible to their needs. Working in the kitchen, it is super important to be alert to what is going on around you.

What makes Aspen unique?
The scenery. It’s so much more than just mountains and trees. There’s lots going on for everyone; kids, adults and seniors. Activities in the valley are super accessible to everyone. Aspen is centrally located and it’s easy access to other areas of Colorado. I’ve even taken the train from Glenwood Springs to Denver for the day, just to do it.

What do you like about working at Aspen Skiing Company?
I live in the employee tiny homes down valley, and it’s convenient with transport from there to many places via bus / employee shuttle making it super easy to get around. Also, I love a job where I have the opportunity to meet so many different people at work. I’ve met athletes and celebrities who are guests and that are personal heroes of mine. We get a ‘perks book,’ too. It’s amazing. I’ve never had an employer that offers so many cool things. I even ski now. I’m really blessed to be here.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering a career or a season in Aspen?
If you want to do it, just do it. You may think working for a ski company might not be for you — for example, I get cold and I’m afraid of heights — but I saw this opportunity to conquer my fears. It can be scary and take sacrifices, but if you make them it will be all worthwhile.

What makes you proud to work at Aspen Skiing Company?
Having a job title I’m proud of. I grew up trying to prove myself, and since I came here I have received the most praise I’ve ever had in my life. When I got my first paycheck I cried. People recognize my hard work. The heads of the culinary department are coming up to me as an equal. I love meeting athletes at events such as X Games, and serving them in the VIP tents ... It’s so cool. I even went to the Lil Wayne, Kygo and other free concerts at X Games. Nothing better than watching Chloe Kim take gold at work!
