Summer Job Title: Frontline Product Sales and Services Agent
Years at Aspen Skiing Company: This is my second winter season working at SkiCo.
Hobbies: Snowboarding, Soccer and I also speak Italian, so I love to practice whenever I get the opportunity!
HOW DID YOU END UP IN ASPEN?
After graduating from the University of Virginia, I worked for half the summer as a camp counselor at a day camp in Northern Italy, and then as a surf instructor in Hatteras, North Carolina. I ended up taking a weekend trip to visit some friends in the D.C. area. On Monday morning, I dropped my friend off at the metro station. It was a gloomy, rainy day, and everyone was dressed in a suit and tie walking with their heads down. I said to myself, “I never want to do this.” I got home and decided to send out as many applications to ski resorts as I could, and Aspen was the first to offer me a position. I had never even heard of Aspen before sending in my application, but it only took a quick Google search to convince me to pack up everything I owned and move out here!

WHAT DO YOU TELL YOUR FRIENDS THAT YOU DO FOR WORK?
I like to joke that I’m the “COVID bouncer.” In all seriousness, my responsibilities are pretty straightforward: Enforce the policies set forth by the county and SkiCo, and help guests navigate our new operating procedures. Simply put, I help out anywhere I’m needed Most of my workday is spent communicating with guests about our policies and procedures, then helping them get where they need to go.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE JOB?
The best part of being a Doorman has to be the customer interaction. Especially this year, face-to-face interactions with guests don’t happen quite as often, so I love that my job gives me the opportunity to get to know our guests. I also find fulfillment in knowing that I play a key role in keeping everyone safe and healthy. I’ve found that the Doorman position really represents an opportunity to serve our community.

WHAT DO YOU FIND MOST CHALLENGING ABOUT YOUR JOB?
AsPen Highlands is largely considered a “local’s mountain,” so one of the main difficulties we’ve faced is that our guests have come to expect a certain way of doing things. I understand this perhaps more than anybody- when we are forced to make operational changes, the familiarity is lost. A key part of my job is to help guide guests as we all try to navigate these uncertain and unfamiliar times together.

WHAT KIND OF SKILLS OR CHARACTERISTICS DO YOU THINK YOUR JOB REQUIRES?
This job undoubtedly requires a lot of charisma, leadership and kindness. When we get busy, it’s particularly important that I can step-up and take charge of a situation. With safety being our top priority, it is important that I can manage chaos and maintain a safe flow of people in and out of the restaurant, all while maintaining a kind and welcoming demeanor.

WHAT MAKES ASPEN UNIQUE?
Aspen is unique for many reasons. I’ve never encountered such diverse terrain. With four mountains on one pass, I can access steep powder, world class terrain parks, tree runs that seem to go on forever, and take my family on more mellow groomers when they visit. In the summer, there are endless trails, stunning vistas, and the weather is spectacular. And you’d think you would have to venture pretty far to get all of these things, but they exist all together in one place, right when I walk out my front door!

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT WORKING AT ASPEN SKIING COMPANY?
I’ve come to learn that SkiCo is a company where the work/play balance is just right. I would’ve never thought that one day my commute to work would be on a chairlift, and my commute home would be on a snowboard! All of my colleagues have a similar interest surrounding snow sports, and it’s fun to build relationships and bond with peers over the snow conditions, our favorite runs, or who knows where the best powder is. We all work hard for our guests and each other, and it’s fun to know that I get to finish my workday doing what I love the most.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO IS CONSIDERING A CAREER OR SEASON IN ASPEN?
Take the leap! I can’t imagine spending the first couple of years out of college doing anything else. I’ve conquered fears, grown as a professional and individual, and gained lifelong friends. I’ve done things I never thought I could do. If you’re debating the decision, consider this- I’m 23 years old, and still have a lot of life to live… but I’ve had a life’s worth of experiences since I took the leap a year and three months ago.

WHAT MAKES YOU PROUD TO WORK AT ASPEN SKIING COMPANY?
We work hard to provide guests with an amazing experience, on and off the slopes. It is an honor to represent a company that not only allows guests to access some of the best terrain in the world, but also plays a major role in things I personally find very important, such as climate activism and social justice. I love working for a company whose mission aligns with my own.
