How did you end up in Aspen?
I had an old roommate in college that lived here in the valley. So while I was in college I came to visit two or three times a year. The place grew on me, so I started looking for a job every time I visited. Then, after many years I was working as a salesperson in Minnesota that offered me the option to transfer to this area so I accepted right away. After a while, I looked for a different challenge, so I went to a job fair for Ski Co in Snowmass and here I am.

What do you tell your friends that you do for work?
All my friends know I sell outdoor gear! In fact, when I ride with someone on the lift, they will know what I do straight away because I start talking to them about their own gear and giving them advice on lenses, skis, etc.

What is your favorite part of the job?
That everyday is different — no two days are the same. Also, having the opportunity to be outside ... I love that we can have ski breaks most days. That’s phenomenal.

What do you find most challenging about your job?
The guest ‘rush-hour’ to get onto the mountain. For one guy (me) to handle a whole new set-up for a new guest is intense. Also being in a commissioned role can be a challenge, but it also can be beneficial.

What skills or characteristics do you think your job requires?
You have to be personable, understand different personalities and cultures. Also knowing how to deal with guests that are in a rush because normally they want to be on the mountain as soon as possible.

What makes Aspen unique?
The options we have: the four mountains we can ride and bike. If you go to other ski resorts, they are just a ski resort. However, Aspen has so much more going on; like the X-games in winter, and all the free concerts in the summer.

What do you like about working at Aspen Skiing Company?
The fact that I can ski and ride the mountain everyday for free and having the ability to ride in between split shifts.

There are so many benefits that Aspen offers, we have a lot of fun and there is a lot of comraderie within the team. Also, there aren’t many companies that would give you access to the products that we have, which are amazing.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering a career or a season in Aspen?
I would say that if you like to get outside, to have fun while you're working — this is the job for you. There aren’t many other jobs that will allow you to do both. Also, have side projects during the shoulder seasons to make money, or just staying busy, that is good, too. Also investigate affordable housing in the valley!

What makes you proud to work at Aspen Skiing Company?
What we do at the Four Mountain Sports at the Viceroy is one-of-a-kind. We are a one-stop-shop. It’s unique because we provide the guests with everything, from tickets all the way through getting on skis. We treat everyone the same way — movie star or local. We greet each guest as a person who has needs and just wants to get out on the hill.
