ART IN UNEXPECTED PLACES
Beginning in 2005, contemporary art and skiing became partners in Colorado through a forward-thinking collaboration between the Aspen Art Museum and the Aspen Skiing Company. Based on the goal of bringing contemporary art to audiences in innovative ways and in unexpected places, we are able to reach out to those that are least likely to engage. For example, for the past eight years, the AAM and ASC have collaborated to produce artworks on ski tickets by such renowned contemporary artists as Yutaka Sone, Peter Doig, Karen Kilimnik, Jim Hodges, Carla Klein, Mamma Andersson, and Mark Grotjahn. The AAM and ASC present works of contemporary art as part of the on-mountain experience. Every year, this collaboration grows stronger and richer.
Artist Dave Muller’s site-specific wall drawing at the new Elk Camp restaurant and David Shrigley’s 2012–2013 limited-edition lift tickets are the latest in an eight-year series of collaborations between the Aspen Art Museum and Aspen Skiing Company that put art in unexpected places. Previous projects have included public performances, installations, limited-edition lift tickets, and participatory artworks by such noted contemporary artists as Yutaka Sone, Peter Doig, Karen Kilimnik, Jim Hodges, Carla Klein, Jennifer West, Susan Philipsz, Mamma Andersson, and Mark Grotjahn.
2012–2013 AAM/ASC Lift Ticket Artist
Notice the witty black-and-white drawings on your lift ticket? The Aspen Art Museum and Aspen Skiing Company selected six artworks by artist David Shrigley to be featured on a limited-edition series of lift tickets for the 2012–13 ski season. David Shrigley works in a number of artistic media but is perhaps best known for his monochromatic, cartoon-like drawings that use a humorous interplay between image and text to highlight human foibles and existential anxieties, and which question everyday perspectives through the use of both image and text.
David Shrigley (b. 1968, Macclesfield, England) is the author of several books, a cartoon contributor to The Guardian’s Weekend section since 2005, and has directed music videos for such groups as Blur and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy. London’s Hayward Gallery recently presented a mid-career survey of his work (2012), which traveled Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco; other recent solo exhibitions include How Are You Feeling, Cornerhouse, Manchester (2012) and the Museum M in Leuven, Belgium (2010–11). Shrigley was featured at the AAM as part of the two-artist exhibition To the Wall (2007). He currently lives and works in Glasgow.

The New Restaurant at Elk Camp, Snowmass Mountain
Los Angeles–based artist Dave Muller is known for his wall drawings and large-scale works on paper that employ iconic structures such as the top-ten list to create diagrammatic but uniquely personal portraits based on the musical passions of their subjects. Stemming from his deep love of music and the communal dialogue it generates across generations and cultures, Muller’s work deftly translates these concerns into aesthetic form. As one critic recently put it, Muller’s work is about the good things that make life worth living—good music, good friends, a little messiness, a lot of color, and a lot of fun.
For the 2012–2013 ski season, Muller has created a site-specific wall drawing for the new restaurant at Elk Camp on Snowmass Mountain. Muller’s installation opens to the public on the season’s opening day. The wall painting is based on a brief questionnaire e-mailed from the artist to Aspen Skiing Company employees in which he inquired about their favorite albums of all time as well as their height.
Dave Muller (b. 1964, San Francisco) lives and works in Los Angeles. He has exhibited widely over the past twenty years, including solo exhibitions at such venues as the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León, Spain; Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and the St. Louis Art Museum, among others. Muller’s large-scale wall drawing An Up-and-Down Arc w/ White Noise was included in the Aspen Art Museum’s 2008 group exhibition Marlon Brando, Pocahontas, and Me, and his 2009 wall painting Solar Arrangment (2009) is permanently installed in the Dallas Cowboys Stadium. Recent group exhibitions to feature Muller’s work include Sympathy for the Devil: Art and Rock and Roll Since 1967 at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (2008) and The Record: Contemporary Art and Vinyl (2011), which was organized by the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University and traveled to the ICA Boston and the Miami Art Museum.
