News for 2010 - 2011

What's New at Aspen/Snowmass for 2011-2012

$26 Million Invested On-Mountain Improvements This Summer
More than $160 Million in Last Eight Years, New Flights and More

Aspen Skiing Company (ASC) will invest over $26 million in on-mountain improvements this season.  Notable projects include the new Tiehack Express, a high speed quad on Buttermilk; a complete remodel of the Merry-Go-Round restaurant on Aspen Highlands; the first phase of the new Elk Camp Restaurant at Snowmass and installation of incandescent free light blubs in every building at ASC.

In addition, American Airlines will offer nonstop flights from Los Angles and Dallas and added more flights from LA and Houston. United Airlines will also offers four daily flights from Chicago and two from San Francisco.  The increased service begins on December 15, 2011

American Airlines Non-Stop Flights From Los Angeles & Dallas
American Eagle Airlines, the regional affiliate of American Airlines, announced it will begin nonstop winter and summer seasonal service between Aspen/Pitkin County Airport in Aspen/Snowmass, Colo., and both Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport, beginning Dec. 15. Eagle will operate the daily trips with two-class CRJ-700 jet aircraft.  The service will run from Dec. 15 through April 2, 2012; then resume June 14 through Aug. 20, 2012.

United Airlines recently added three new flights servicing Aspen/Snowmass including a fourth daily fight from Los Angeles, a second from Houston, and one more from Denver.  United Airlines also offers four daily flights from Chicago and two from San Francisco.  The increased service begins on December 15, 2011

Tiehack Express – $ 7 million improvement
The new Tiehack Express, a Leitner Poma high speed quad at Tiehack on Buttermilk, will replace two lifts –  both the Eagle Hill and the Upper Tiehack lifts – bringing two lifts down to one and cutting the combined ride time from 18 minutes to just under 7 minutes.  Construction is well underway and this $7 million project will be up and running by Buttermilk’s Opening Day, December 10, 2011.  New gladed terrain in this area will enhance the intermediate and advanced terrain accessed by this lift.

Merry-Go-Round Restaurant Remodel - $6 million improvement
The Merry-Go-Round restaurant, situated mid-mountain at Aspen Highlands, is currently under going a $6 million major remodel to make the building more energy efficient as well as enhance guest comfort and food quality.

The freshest and local ingredients will continue to be used whenever possible and the restaurant will have enhanced pizza, pasta, soup and dessert stations. 100 percent locally-raised, grass-fed beef will continue to be served and there will be a new home-style station with favorites like BBQ and fried chicken.  The interior theme will be “duct-tape chic” keeping with the original Merry-Go-Round and Aspen Highlands grassroots style while creating a modern and comfortable atmosphere. The reopening is scheduled for opening day of Aspen Highlands on December 10, 2011.

Phase One of the Elk Camp Restaurant:

Aspen Skiing Company has begun reconstruction this summer on the new Elk Camp Restaurant, which will replace Café Suzanne and be located adjacent to the top of the Elk Camp Gondola at Snowmass in 2012/2013. The $15 million dollar project will provide a restaurant with seating for up to 300 guests and include summer and evening event space. The project is scheduled to be LEED Certified and to implement advanced heating systems with other green materials to beat local energy codes by an estimated 30 percent. Elk camp will be ASC’s fifth LEED certified building, following closely on the heels of Sam’s Restaurant (Gold) and Holiday House (Platinum.)

Incandescent Lighting Ban – $140,000
Aspen/Snowmass is investing $140,000 this season to replace nearly all incandescent light bulbs with more energy efficient LED and florescent bulbs by December 31, 2011.  This project includes all buildings at Aspen Skiing Company from hotel properties to parking lots.  Banning incandescent light bulbs is an industry first and will save an estimated 50-75 percent in lighting energy use each year, contributing significantly to Aspen Skiing Company’s goal of reducing total C02 emissions by 10 percent by 2012 (on a 2000 baseline, even as the company grows). From 2000-2010, ASC was able to reduce C02 emissions from electricity use by 6.5 percent.  The company is currently on target to achieve a 5 percent reduction of total C02 emissions in 2011.

$164 million invested over the past 8 seasons:
Over the previous eight seasons, ASC has invested more than $164 million giving guests the most seamless skiing/riding experience in the industry. Improvements over that period includes 11 new lifts with two new gondolas, the new Snowmass Base Village, the industry-leading Treehouse Kids’ Adventure Center, a complete interior remodel of The Little Nell hotel, four new restaurants, the acquisition of The Limelight Lodge, a resort-wide art exhibit, plus the opening of additional terrain.

Art on the Mountains
Aspen/Snowmass is proud to present a multi-site exhibition of renowned artist Walter Niedermayr, whose large-scale photographs entitled The Aspen Series, will be featured at venues and locations throughout Aspen/Snowmass. In addition Aspen/Snowmass continues to build on the theme of art in unexpected places, fostered by the partnership with Aspen Art Museum. Begun six years ago, the tradition features unique contemporary art images printed on lift tickets.

Snowmass Discoveries

In October of 2010, a bulldozer operator working in Snowmass Village uncovered the bones of a 43,500 year old Columbian mammoth.  This discovery has turned out to be one of the most significant scientific discoveries in Colorado and possibly the country. To date, this single site has produced eight to 10 American mastodons; four Columbian mammoths; four Ice Age bison; two Ice Age deer; a Jefferson’s ground sloth; many tiger salamanders; evidence of beavers, insects, snails; and large quantities of well-preserved plant matter—some of which is still green after tens of thousands of years. In just 18 days of excavation, the Denver Museum of Science & Nature crews recovered approximately 600 bones and bone pieces and plan to return in Spring of 2011 to continue the excavation.
