The Bingham Cup
The Bingham Cup originated in 1951 with
Robert Bingham, an official and timer for Aspen ski races. Bingham thought
women should have a cup similar to the men’s Roch Cup, so he donated one
that bore his name. Bingham and his wife were good friends of Walter and
Elizabeth Paepcke, who co-founded the Aspen Skiing Company.
Over the years, the Bingham Cup has been claimed by a number of
prestigious women racers:
- In March 1965, Canadian Nancy Greene won the Bingham Cup, and again
in 1968 when the cup was presented to her in Wagner Park by famed
newscaster and ski enthusiast Lowell Thomas.
- In March 1976, Danielle Debernard of France finished second in both GS and downhill to finish first in the women’s combined standings in Aspen and receive the Bingham Cup.
- In March 1981, Tamara McKinney of the U.S. came from behind to win the World Cup GS overall and the Bingham Cup.
- In March 1982, the Bingham Cup went to Marile Epple of West Germany.
- In March 1988, Aspen hosted its first women’s-only World Cup race. Anita Wachter of Austria was the winner of the Bingham Cup.
